About Multatuli Travel

Multatuli Travel was founded in 1993 by Freek ten Broeke. He felt inspired by his work with Doctors without Borders in the Netherlands and in developing countries to start organising trips to these countries. During these trips the traveller would be given an opportunity to learn more about the country and its culture as well to become acquainted with the work being done by both local and Dutch based organisations. Multatuli became the first non-commercial travel organisation to offer sustainable tourism based on the Max Havelaar principles of fair trade, cultural and responsible tourism and mutual respect.

Unfortunately, this type of sustainable travel was not widely supported in the 90’s and as of 2000 Multatuli’s sole focus became the sale of airline tickets to aid organisations. Multatuli has established, in collaboration with several airlines, fares especially targeted at this group. To this day Multatuli does not sell to the commercial market but provides tickets only for registered aid organisations.

Multatuli Travel was the first travel agency in the Netherlands to join forces with the Social Venture Network Europe. By doing this the idea of Corporate Social Responsability and the responsibility for the effects of an ever changing climate became a vital part of our policy making.

We are aware that increased air travel leads to an increase in carbon dioxide emission and global warming. The Cool Flying programme was created as a way to counter these effects. This is the first programme set up to compensate the dangerous emission of gasses released through air traffic. The Dutch travel industry took a keen interest in the Cool Flying programme and we have since joined forces with Greenseat. This collaboration became instrumental in increasing environmental awareness in both travellers and organisations. There is a great need for projects like Cool Flying and other initiatives focusing on saving the environment. Because of this Greenseat has joined up with the Climate Neutral Group.
